Graaff-Reinet at dusk

circa +_ 1902

Beautiful Graaf-Reinet is the axis town of the great Karoo region of South Africa. And once frontier town, it still holds much of that magic! What more could any person who wishes to paint ask for. I am very blessed to be here, and I hope some of the sentiment is carried over onto this work. I did it on a Georgian piece of heavyweight rough paper, with a limited pallete winsor and newton half pan watercolours.

I did the penciling and first wash on location, with final tones added and white gouche highlights to finish at home in the studio. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece, especially the passages of green under the trees in the church grounds and the lights silhouetted by Spandoukop on the peripheral background.
